In a recent interview with France 24, the musician was asked if the addition of an African music category to the Grammys was opportune, and he said that it was “God’s timing.”
He did, however, claim that African music and culture have always been “dominant” but are only now gaining international attention.
The host responded by asking, “What do you think about this new category, the Best African Music Performance that has now been added to the Grammys, late to the party or right on time?”
Davido said, “God’s timing is the best. African music has dominated for many years. So, if you’re wondering if we should have received an acknowledgement, the answer is definitely yes. But everything takes time. As I have stated, God has the finest timing.
“And I’m quite excited about this new category, not just for myself, but also for my fellow nominees. It’s incredibly lovely that folks back home can create African music and win Grammys. That’s truly incredible to witness. So I would say it’s God’s timing, not late.”
